What It Is To Give Something To Someone

why should you gift, act of kindness, how to be happy, why do things for othersEver wondered what it takes to give someone something wholeheartedly? Happiness, pleasure, satisfaction? I can go on with ten plus more words and try to describe the feel, but I am sure what it feels is much more than what the description says.

Yesterday, I was invited for a dinner by a friend who recently got engaged. A great time with the couple and new friends. I had believed that the dinner was for the celebration and announcement of their future plans. I was right about it but the evening concluded with a pleasant surprise to it.

The couple made an announcement, “Instead of taking gifts from others for being engaged, we decided to give it to someone.” and gifted something  truly valuable to their friend. It was one of his trusted friends who was with us. Different faces had different expressions. The receiver was in a pleasant surprise, slightly hesitant to accept the most needed and a valuable gift at that moment of his and the giver was in utmost joy, a feeling of being thoughtful and I was wondering how could someone do it? (Easily?)

We have seen our family members and friends caring for us and understanding our needs. Whenever something like this has happened, it has always made me wonder what it makes to give someone something. The straight answer is joy. I know! But there is much deeper meaning to an act like this.

Altruism

Psychology says, “Gifting someone is a sign of altruism” Of course, gifting here means gifting someone wholeheartedly. Isn’t it an absolute satisfaction? To know that the ‘You’ are being selfless. Not thinking about what it costs to you and focusing solely on what it means to someone.

Gratitude

Dictionary says Gratitude is the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Gratitude is the facet of positive psychology reflecting positively on optimism, energy, and empathy.

Happiness

Happiness reminds me of a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson,

“Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting some on yourself.”

Probably, we are programmed like that, most of the times we are asked to make others happy to keep ourselves happy.

Accomplishment

The feeling of accomplishment adds an extra grade on your self-esteem. To see someone happy because of you is a great confidence booster

Reassurance of relationship

Reassurance for both. To the giver and taker. Taker acknowledges your care and concern whereas you, the giver, acknowledge the takers care and concern which turned you into a selfless person.

And Again! The Feel is much more than words

No matter how much I write about what it feels and how much others tell about it, what it feels to you is much more than words put up together.

Couldn’t agree more with your words here. It’s a feeling of happiness which comes from seeing someone we love, happy. Also, I believe a gift should never be measured by the price, but by the amount of love with which it is wrapped. :-)

That’s so right Maniparna. Never measure by price! It feels so good to know people value emotions and come with such kind gestures :)
