It is Not about How Hard You Hit, But It is about How many times You Can get Hit and Keep Moving Forward

– Rocky Balboa

I honestly consider it quite an honour to be writing about this quote. It was one of my favourite ones growing up, the song from Rocky would be buzzing on my earphones as I listened to eye of the tiger and it all seemed so possible.

I guess such is the effect of a powerful quote – some of them make us think, some of them make us smile but very few of them actually kick us out of the bed to do something! And no wonder we love this quote for the exact same reasons – the kick in the right place.

Too many times we are told about life in polished words – there are the elders who say – don’t worry about the results, keep working hard you will get there. There are books which talk about perseverance in glorified manner and call it the secret of success. I am not denying either one of them, but I think to some extent they all make it sound quite easy. Truth is as we know – none of these things are ever easy, we all have had to struggle to achieve the things we are proud of today and we will continue to do so. Maybe that is why we appreciate them so much.

When we read these success stories, people say – Einstein did not fail a thousand times – he found how not to succeed and so on. Truth is, it really hurts when we are down, it really pains to take a punch in the face about something we are absolutely passionate about. It hurts even more when we think we have done everything we got but yet it results in an unfavourable result. We all feel bad about it and there is no shame in crying about it either.

The unfortunate truth is that – No one cares! After a while even we realise that we don’t care about the reasons as to why something did not happen. The doggedness within us says – Screw it, I want this to happen, I will figure out what went wrong and set things right. We say this not because we think we are great, we say this because we feel so strongly about the goal we are after. And such is the power of our goal and resolute and the ability to take feedback on the face and find a way to move ahead.

For it is way too easy to feel sorry for oneself and it is kinda nice to get that sympathy from people around us. But how long are we going to survive on that. We need to find a way to get out of that phase before we start detesting the attention and detesting ourselves. The simplest way ahead is to sulk about it a bit and then get back to what can take you forward. And that is in entirety the beauty of this quote here, taking a hit and keep moving forward for all that makes sense is to keep moving forward cos we owe it to the dream!

For a fresh reminder, I thought you might like the dialogue from the man himself – a clip from youtube.

    1. That’s a very good question Maitreni. I do agree on the precision idea, but there is a slight danger of spending too much time on preparation than actually acting out which kinda holds back the entire process. I love this quote because of the idea of persistence it projects, quite simply about getting up in the face of failure and saying that I am stronger than that and making it count. That is something incredible I would like to believe..

    1. Thank you Kashpal :). True that, there are a hundred different things that can stop us and question our abilities. We don’t have much of a choice to stand up to them and find a way out of that. After all, it is our lives and we gotta make the best of the situation. That will be the only way out I believe..
