You can’t cross the sea merely by standing- Rabindranath Tagore

Continuing our discussions on quotes, today we present a quote by Rabindranath Tagore – “You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water”. This quote and its debate touches upon aspects of making a start, importance of immediate, measurable actions to support your longstanding journey of achieving your dreams. Rabindranath Tagore needs no introduction. His quotes have a tremendous depth in them and loaded with a great poetic sense to them. All along, there is a strong message and note to inculcate to keep boosting your strides to achieve your heart’s desires.

I love the beauty of this quote and its strong urge towards action. As we try and explore dimensions of this quote, I would like to take this discussion in a questioning approach.

Your Dreams

We all have some fascinating dreams – some which keep us alive and the others which make us sleepless. These are our dreams, they hold a very special place in your heart.

  • Why are these dreams special to you?
  • What are you willing to do to make this real?
  • What are you willing to give up?
  • How much does this mean to you?
  • What do you feel when you visualise the success of this dream?

The Vision

The last question is perhaps the most important one – your vision of the dream.

  • What are your emotions when you think of the dream?
  • How do you feel when you achieve it?
  • What is the reaction of people around you?
  • Does this energise you, push you to do amazing things with your day?

You Actions

The beauty of a dream is in its vision. The beauty of this vision is in making it a reality.

That’s precisely where this quote is headed.

It is a rare commodity to have a dream, passion and a true calling. You will be fooling yourself if you don’t listen to these signals. The true essence of a dream lies in its call for action.

It is not a feeling which is nice to have, but it is a feeling which goads you to do something about it. You owe something to this dream and calling!

On that note, please join our discussion with your comments below. We are very eager to hear your views and inspirations.

It is correct. God helps him, who helps himself. One may have a dream, but he has to do some work to push his dream to become a reality.

True Abhijit, a dream wanes if it is left on its own, it becomes a wish. It makes sense only when it is followed by a vision and desire to make it come true. what better way to work on your dreams than start it with a simple action which can take you towards the journey of achieving these dreams and making them come true. After all, what good are dreams and desires if they are not supported with accompanying action?!

Thanks Raj. I love these action oriented quotes – reminds me of a quote. If you know something, it is knowledge, but it is useful only when you act on it. I love the quotes from Tagore, this one in particular had a stronger impression from the moment I read it.
