To live in the present moment is a miracle

To live in the present moment is a miracle: You may call it mindfulness or conscious activity, but it is indeed a key skill to have. Our lives are busy and filled with a huge To-Do list. From the start to the end of the day – it is almost magical that this list never ends. However, do we stop to consider – are we living every moment of our life with concentration and derive joy from all these actions without feeling rushed or pressured?

To live in the present moment is a miracle. The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth in the present moment, to appreciate the peace and beauty that are available now.

Thich Nhat Hanh

For me, this is the beauty of this quote by Thich Nhat Hanh – to live in the present moment is a miracle. The quote is a reminder that our lives are rich and passionate on a daily basis. Of course, there will be distractions to take us away – these can be goals, pressures and work deadlines. But at each fleeting moment, this time we have is gone and left us. The least we can do is to make the best out of it.

To Live in the present moment is a miracle meaning

If you think closely about living in the present moment, this quote tells you to enjoy life as it comes. However, a part of us questions – what about our dreams, passions and goals? If we keep living in the present moment, won’t we get distracted and move away from these? It can be about your emotions while you read this article or a beautiful conversation with your colleague. Life is happening as we speak, and to live in this present moment is nothing short of a miracle.

Key highlights of the meaning of living in the present moment:
  • Identifying life as it happens and recognising our emotions. It can be anger, joy, passion or kindness. Each of these emotions are pure and a lovely call for action. We can decide what to do about it later, the first step is to recognise what they are telling us.
  • Let go of the baggage and think of what’s happening right now. It is easy to get caught up in our own thoughts and create a web of narratives. No one will know the complete objective truth. Instead of getting sucked into this, stop for a few minutes – life out there is happening rightin front of us.
  • Our dreams, passions and goals are motivators – the stress they give us a lovely reminder of what we need to do. Life is about balance, not about sacrificing everything you have for just a goal.

Making time for yourself – Living in the moment

Time doesn’t magically manifest – whether it is free time or time for your work. We have to create a plan for it. If things naturally fell in place, life would be awesome. But the good news is that we still control the balance of this time. Amidst all our pressures, we still get to choose what we do and prioritise. There are various techniques to manage time – Eisenhower Matrix and 4 quadrants, 4Ds of time management, etc. You can choose what works best for you.

All these techniques will tell you the same thing – prioritise. We can’t do everything on our list. We just have to be clever about time and find ways to manage our priorities. There’s no point in trying to be superhuman and let pressures take over you.

Time for yourself means the time to think and create opportunities for yourself. It is also about being mindful so that you don’t lose most of your time in distractions as you think about the miracle of living in the present moment.
