TIME ‘Person of the Year’: Ebola Fighters

TIME ‘Person of the Year’: Ebola Fighters

None of us guessed this to become the TIME ‘Person of the Year’. At least not for the Indians who knew the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the top in the list. Indians’ vote sums up to 16% of the almost 5 million votes casted this year. A few of us might be disappointed for not seeing Modi’s name as the ‘Person of the Year.’ But I am very sure that the same WE are happy to know that Ebola Fighters are termed as the ‘Person of the Year.‘ The Ebola fighters, the doctors, the caregivers, the nurses,  the scientists, the directors truly deserve to be on the top of the list.

Here is what the editor of TIME Nancy Gibbs said about the winner- Ebola Fighters.

“They risked and persisted, sacrificed and saved.”

The list of shortlisted leaders and groups:

Ferguson Protesters, The Activists

The activists who fought for the justice to the young man Michael Brown, 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer of  St. Louis County, Missouri, United States.

Brown was walking with his friend on the middle of the street when the police officer drove up and told them to move to the sidewalk. It led to an altercation which later ended up with the police officer shooting the young man with about 7 bullets. This led to the unrest protest by the people in Ferguson and the longstanding racial tensions between the majority-black population. They built a movement to bring into the picture of all the fatal racial discrimination and injustice happening to the people there.

  1. This is a great initiative. Those who dare to stand by the victims of the deadly disease do deserve such recognition. :-)

True Maniparna. It gives me a chill to think about the doctors and nurses who are putting their life into danger to help people.

  2. Nitin 'fLanker' Balodi

This is great. The people who devoted themselves for containing the Ebola outbreak surely deserve a salute and recognition of this kind. Even two days back I stumbled upon a patent application filed for improved therapy on Ebola. The best thing was that I could see two Indian Names among inventor. I even write an article on the same. You can check it here – https://greybmusings.wordpress.com/2014/12/11/us-health-dept-files-patent-for-improved-ebola-treatment/

The another good thing was – the research is supported by US Govt. If the patent has been filed by some Pharma company like Novratis , then the cost of the cure could have risen to 5-10 folds.

    1. Vidyashree Nagaraju

That is nice to know Nitin. Oh I wasn’t aware of research thing. 5 to 10 folds will be a lot of money. I would want to read your article. I will get back to you on it.

  3. Alok Vats

Good to hear this, though I was a bit upset with exclusion of the name of our Prime Minister from the last finalists, but then finally they gave the award to the best one…

    1. Vidyashree Nagaraju

He He Alok most of the Indians were upset because of this and we are very happy to know that the person of the year were awarded to the most deserved ones.
