Some people come in our life as blessings and some as lessons

I love this beautiful quote by Mother Teresa talking about the type of people we encounter in life. We were never promised a rosy life with the best people in the world. The law of averages tells us that you’ll meet a few awful people in life. However, going by the same law, you’ll also meet some incredible people who’ll make you feel that life is a beautiful journey. The point in the quote is – we all have blessings and lessons in life. But neither is wasteful. People come into our lives for various reasons. it feels like there’s a mystical element of unknown to it. But they come into our life, it is up to us to decide how close we let them be. This depends on our outlook and confidence in the initial perception we will have about them.

It is very hard to decide about people in the first interaction itself. Our first impressions can be faulty and may not convey the full picture. But, these people have a purpose and have entered our life for a reason. So what’s the moral then? Do we open ourselves up to everyone in the hope that they are blessings? Or do we need to be extra careful and treat everyone with a lot of care for the fear of being hurt by them?

Some people come into our lives as blessings

As you’ve guessed already, my answer is always in the balance. We can’t say anything about the quality of relationships unless they’ve stood the test of time. I have numerous examples of people who gave a fantastic first impression and ended up being harsh lessons. Some of these lessons were so painful that I didn’t even talk to them anymore. On the other hand, these painful experiences have left me with some lessons and a few scars. The lessons are about being careful and ensuring that I don’t let my values erode in the process.

Also, on the flip side, I’ve been blessed with some people who’ve just turned around my life in an instant. They’ve been a magical influence on my personality and have made me trust life and love again. It is really hard to know everything right at the start. It is only time that tells us whether people are lessons or blessings. Unless we are open for lessons, we don’t get the blessings. Life can’t be just one-sided and give us only blessings no matter how much we want it.

The bitter experiences make us appreciate the good ones and also leave us with lessons about what we are to people around us. We may not have control over the type of people we meet in life. But we can have control over the type of people we become and the influence we have. If we don’t get the blessings we want, we can at least try and be the blessings that we can give others. Perhaps that’s the meaning of this quote by Mother Teresa – some people come into our lives as blessings and some others as lessons.

So true! There are more lessons than blessings, however.

Yeah in some ways. I also think there are these phases – the good ones and the bad ones. The good ones make us aware of more blessings – the bad phases however are difficult to handle – particularly in a depressed or a low mood state – there seem to be more lessons. Maybe there’s an even balance, sometimes there is more of blessings and lessons some other. The best thing we might be able to do is to focus as much as possible on the balance and prevent ourselves getting into a shell thinking about the hardships
