Shashi Tharoor Removed As Congress Spokesperson, How fair Is It?

Shashi Tharoor is a two-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram,a  former Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Human Resource Development and a former UN Under-Secretary-General. He was an official speaker for Congress but not anymore. Yea! You heard it right. He is removed as a congress spokesperson.

What happened?

On October 2nd, PM Modi started the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign. He invited 9 people who are not a part of his government to help to gather people and spread awareness regarding the same. The campaign isn’t constrained to a particular state, religion or political party. It is a wakeup call for every one of us to see the India the way we desire.

Shashi tharoor was happy to receive a nomination from the PM.  As Tharoor had responded gracefully for Modi’s earlier tweet as a chief-minister to exhort youths of India to register for voting. Tharoor did the same even now.

He praised Modi in his web posts for nominating him for such a good cause and expressed his happiness.

What happened next?

The Kerala unit of Congress felt his appreciation to be way too much in the favour of BJP and was humiliating to their party. They slammed Tharoor and urged the central leadership to take action against him. And now, Yes! He is removed as Congress spokesperson. This is the main reason for such a decision by Congress and a part of it could be the post-mortem report of Tharoor’s late wife Sunanda Pushkar .

Is the decision fair?

I am neither a supporter of BJP nor a hater of congress party. I am just a common Indian who has the ability to decide what is fair and what isn’t. His appreciation for the PM wasn’t political in statements. He was happy to take responsibility to be the brand ambassador for cleaning campaign. That was nothing to do with any political party. It was for a good cause, for the country.

Have a look at what Tharoor said,

“I have always appreciated good words or deeds in others even if they are in the opposite camp – and I have, with equal strength, criticised them when they are in the wrong. But I have never diluted my beliefs and principles, which are dearer to me than my life or career.”

“My fundamental commitment is to India’s progress, and I remain convinced that the Congress Party is the best and most inclusive vehicle to accomplish that progress,”

He is the citizen of India first and later the spokesperson for Congress.

Should his intentions to bring a change, responsibility to work for betterment  be confined to the party alone?

Isn’t ‘Swachh Bharat’ movement is for entire country?

Tharoor was not politically correct. That’s a serious mistake in politics. The Opposition Party cannot praise the Ruling Party – fundamental rule in politics. :)

Ha ha fundamental rule of politics :D Then I must say he was fundamentally incorrect and as responsible politician icon he was correct :)

Totally unfair. It clearly shows the poor mentality of the so called secular party INC.

It is unfortunate that Shashi Tharoor has been penalised by his party. It seems there is no place for unbiased opinion on national issues, this day and age. Mr. Tharoor is very articulate person. He has praised Mr. Modi’s gesture and lack of gloating after winning election. He also agreed to be part of Swacch Bharat movement and presided Modi’s performance at UNGA. Obviously it did not go down well with his mentors in the party. It is a disappointing decision. Congress would rather happy with sycophant like foul mouth Mr. Mani Iyer than personable Mr. Shashi Tharoor.

I agree with your last statement Abhijit. I was shocked to see this news. A few political parties want to make small pointless things big and neglect big things as if it didn’t happen at all.

He infused some sanity in politics. Oppositions in Parliament are there to criticize any anti people move but if the move is pro people then they support it…wondering where has the true essence of politics gone….

Thank you for your comment. They care more about their image than country’s.

  6. Same with me…I always opine from a neutral standpoint when it comes to politics. About this incident, all I can say that most of our politicians will never grow up and at the same time they’re retarding the process of development…

I wonder how they manage to stay for years together on seat. They will all be there till money speaks more than values for certain set of people.

I too am in the same boat when it comes to politics, neither like BJP nor congress. And I feel it is totally unfair to have him sacked…but I think there is nothing more to this either..me thinks its just okay. No?
