I am sure you know the reason why we picked this quote to write about today. Simple and elegant in its own rustic way, unless you really really suck, then the best alternative is to just try and be yourself.

Now this is perhaps one of the hardest thing to do. We live in a society with so many rules – both written and unwritten ones. The written ones are quite easy but the unwritten ones can prove to be quite a pain to follow.

It’s damn tough to be ourselves!

And with everything we do, there are these prying eyes which are waiting for us to make a mistake so that they can make fun of it all through their lives unless we make a bigger one. So yeah, it is pretty damn tough to be ourselves. It kinda reminds me of this quote – In a world which is trying to make you someone else, being yourself is the greatest achievement.

I maybe paraphrasing a bit here, but you get the message.

For me, the second part of the quote is even more interesting than the first one – be yourself unless you SUCK! Now that is a strong word and none of us believe that we suck! But we are plagued by times where we doubt our confidence and wonder if it makes sense to follow the herd because standing out means that you have to take on the whole herd at once.

Do we have a choice

But the way we see it, we really have very little choice here. Sooner or later, we all realise there is something incredible within us and we are cheating ourselves if we are trying to live a life for the sake of someone else.

Sure, it will keep those idiots off our back, the society will not condemn us as long as it doesn’t fear us. But the society has never liked an outlier and hence it attacks the very moment you or I choose to be ourselves. And that is just about getting over the hump. We all know the complete cycle of a society – Denial, Attack, Respect and finally Imitation. Of course these are based on the requirement that we make something commendable of us.

So.. Yes! Being ourselves does come at a cost, but then it is a good pressure to have on our back isn’t it? Especially when we know that so many people are waiting for us to fail – it is all the more reason to succeed.

Well moral of the story is – be yourself, unless you suck!

I agree. It’s not easy to ‘be yourself’. As society demands, we have to conceal or reveal our emotions and feelings. We change colour no less than a chamaeleon. Being ourselves does come with a cost! Well said…

Thank you Maniparna. I couldn’t have said it better, as the society demands, we do have to conceal a few of our feelings and emotions. And it all comes at a cost and I guess it all finally boils down to whether we have what it takes to stick to the beliefs which we hold close to ourselves.
