Lata Mangeshkar: 1 Day In School And 6 Doctorates!

Lata Mangeshkar is undoubtedly the pride of Indian music. Often called as a Nightingale for her mellifluous voice, she was and will always remain one of the best singers India has ever seen. It’s her 85th birthday today. She is an absolute inspiring woman who has ruled the music industry for over 7 decades.

On the special occasion of her birthday here are a few facts and anecdotes you are probably not aware of.


ACHIEVEMENTS


  • She is the second vocalist to have been awarded with Bharat Ratna. The first being M S Subbulakshmi (Queen of Music)
  • She has recorded songs for over a 1000 Hindi films and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in the world.
  • She has sung over 36 Indian regional languages and foreign languages.
  • she has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by 6 universities including the New York University.

A FEW UNTOLD STORIES


Started At The Age Of 5:

Once  a student of her father was practicing. 5 year old Lata observed him. Went to him and said the way he was singing was wrong and it didn’t match the way what she had heard from her father. And she later sang the way her father sings and that’s how her journey towards glory began.


Decided Not To Go To School:

Heard of story which says that she started teaching songs to other children on the very first day of her school. When the teacher stopped her, young Lata was upset with this and decide not to go to school again.


Work didn’t Drive Her Away from Passion:

Lata Mangeshkar’s father passed away when she was young. The family responsibility was on her shoulders. She started working as an actor at an young age and perused her passion as a singer


Rejections!

Can you believe the most amazing voice of India was rejected for her voice earlier. Yes! “You have thin voice, not suitable for playback” This is what she heard from people. Her persistence and perseverance proved to the ones who rejected her once is an example for many of us who gets rejected in life.


It Doesn’t Always Work:

She sang her first movie song for a Marati Movie and what she noticed after the release of the movie was that her very first song was dropped out from the final cut.


Music Is God:

It’s said that Lata Mangeshkar sing barefooted always. She sees music as the God and its her way to show respect to the divine music. I love her quote – Music was within me, I was full of it!

One Day School Yet 6 Honorary Doctorates:

Lata Mangeshkar didn’t go to school but she received Honorary Doctorates from 6 Universities including one from New York University. It’s that an amazing pride to receive from a foreign university? Well, her achievement proves that you need not be a top grader to end up top in life :)

    She is a gem of our country, a proud to the nation. To pick some of the best songs sung by her is really a difficult task however I would like to add Paani paani re – Maachis, Dil hoom hoom kare – Rudali, Luka chuppi – Rang de Basanti, Mere ghar aayi ek nanhi pari – Kabhi Kabhi, Meri Awaaz hi meri Pechaan hai – Kinara, Tujhse naraaz nahi zindagii – Masoom….:).
