Gossip is just a tool to distract people: Continuing the thought of the day series, today’s focus is on the gossip quote by Anna Godberson. My tryst with gossips is both a guilty pleasure and an annoyance on why it is such a huge waste of time. Although I keep telling myself that gossip is bad, I do indulge in it time and again for the pleasure of it. I don’t know how good or bad it is, but surely when it starts hurting someone, it is probably clear red signals to stop.
Gossip is just a tool to distract people
As we both know, gossips need three entities – storyteller, listener and finally the spreader. The gossip dies a painful death without all three entities actively at work. This is almost a clear indicator that the person indulging in gossip certainly has a lot of free time at their hand. I’ve been fairly guilty of that.
I’ve also come to recognise that it is nothing but a waste of my time. Even more, is the pain in wasting someone else’s time. We talked in detail about how to deal with gossips in one of our earlier posts which shares some insight on working through the harmful effects. In this post, I’d like to restrict my thoughts to the sheer process of creating, spreading and developing the gossip further.
Why do people gossip? – Source of your gossip
The simple answer as expressed in the quote is – because they have nothing better to do. Perhaps the thought process was slightly wrong. What if we extend this definition each time we hear the gossip? If we are able to train the mind to think of these questions
- Why is this person gossiping?
- Is there any truth to it or do they have nothing better to do?
- Do I have nothing better to do with my time?
The trouble with most of these things is that we indulge in them unconsciously. If we are able to drive some consciousness to this thought process, we can elevate our time management to a compelling format. Think of all the great things you can do with more time during the day?
Gossip is just a tool to distract people who have nothing better to do from feeling jealous of those few of us still remaining with noble hearts.
