The main message spread through this article is in understanding your own values and standards. In doing so, we must question the false values imposed on us either by society or by our peer group. The most common culprits which sway us away from being ourselves are society, false expectations and the struggle to fit in. This reminds me of the quote – Why fit in when you are born to stand out?

In understanding the meaning of being yourself, it is very important to understand who you are and what you stand for. Your thoughts, desires and dreams have immense value. You need to explore and identify what they are before falling victim to the herd mentality.

What would you be if not yourself?

Who would you rather be? I’m sure we all have role models for the different things to achieve in life. But there’s little value in being someone, isn’t it?

If you are trying to be a copy of someone else, at best you are only going to be an imitation of something original. Your value will be very little in comparison with the original because people will never see you as a separate entity. You’ll always be compared against someone or something you’re aping.

This doesn’t necessarily need to be bad, but you need to ask the question. Who do you want to be? What are the values you stand for?

Will you be happy if you are something else?

A key question to consider with respect to – Be yourself because an original is worth more than a copy – Will you be happy by being someone or something else?

Sure, there are a few reasons why you’d want to be someone else. But, are you willing to give up all of your values for that? You can find several examples of people who’ve sacrificed their own personality in trying to copy someone else. In such a case, are you doing justice to your original thoughts and values? Look within and ask yourself – what are the values that define me? What do I want to be known for?

How to be happy being yourself?

The most important point in this quote is about being comfortable with your own thoughts and values. The peer group around you and your own expectations sometimes will try and pull you into the trap of a herd mentality. In order to avoid this temptation, look within and identify your own values.

Create a vision for your personal life identifying your core values. Each time you feel doubt or your gut says that you might be compromising your values, look back at your vision and see if it adds up. Being yourself is not easy, particularly in a world that is trying to make you into someone else. You’ll have to fight for the values you stand for.

This starts with being mindful of what they are and creating a mechanism to feel proud, each time you stand up for them. You can establish these values to be happy and reinforce your standards to the world in several ways.

Be yourself is not a counsel I’d give to, say, a sadist. Well, that joke apart, being oneself is of vital importance. But the terrible reality is that we live in a world of make-believe…
