The easiest way to chase money is by changing your business to the whims of your customers. This means invalidated business cases and just compromising your ability to scale for short term gains. This easily translates into going against the definition of a startup whose purpose is to scale and delay gratification. If you’re too focussed on money, then you run the risk of compromising your vision.
Confusing values about business
Chasing money gives conflicting views about the purpose, value and vision of a business. It is an awfully difficult mode to inspire the teams to perform just to earn more money. What happens at times of difficulty? You will run an immediate risk of losing employees because most of the relationships you’ve developed through money are transactional.
Short term decisions overtaking vision
This is the most important one of all – short term decisions based on money overriding the purpose and value of your business idea. Running a startup is difficult. But it is more so when it doesn’t have a purpose. The short term sacrifices ultimately come to bite us back in the long run. There will be no gain without associated pains!
