You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great: This quote talks about analysis paralysis – we sometimes get so caught up in having the perfect scenario that we don’t start at all. Whenever we feel stuck or lost in thought, this quote is a reminder that every great thing was once just a plan. It got better with time. When we read about these achievements, they appear planned and well thought out – that’s because they tell a story. These stories are easier to tell in retrospect, even your success stories will be the same.
You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great – Zig Ziglar Quotes
The reality however is that things are complicated, it takes multiple plans to create a good outcome. These plans change with time and we learn, adapt and grow with time. For all this to happen, we have to make a start somewhere and create an opportunity for us to be on this journey.

You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great
This is a great motivator for people who are stuck in the planning mode, unable to execute and take action. A plan sometimes is alluring because we are in control of the inputs to the plan and it is easy to assume that things will work out as per them. The reality however is vastly different and capable of challenging us in unexpected ways. Although it is very tempting to keep planning, at some point we have to decide to act on this plan. Once we start on the plan, the reality will treat us with different scenarios based on which we have to adapt.

If there’s a temptation to make the perfect plan and wait till all the factors align, we might need to pause and challenge ourselves to see if we are approaching this in the right manner. It is a strong caution and call to prevent the analysis paralysis and do something with our plans.
It is important to start and move forward
No one can take away the effort that we put towards something. We might not be great as we start. To be fair most people are bad when they start. They all build up their skillset through consistent effort, continuous improvement and the desire to grow. The desire fuels our effort, the ambition keeps everything alive. We can’t compare our start to the finish line and feel bad that we haven’t got what it takes.
Things will never be perfect for us to start
However, in this process, we delay the start by so much that we lose the advantage of time. the problem with this approach start even if we make the best form of progress the amount of time lost will eventually hurt us. This quote reminds us to take a pause and think what’s most important – whether it is the perfect plan or something good enough that can enable us to start.
Greatness will come with time and adaptation to our plans after we start
Unless we start, we will never know to whether something works for us. There’s only one way to find out. It is through action, results and adapting our approach through results. It will challenge us enough to make us wonder whether we are doing the right thing. But this happens to everyone including the greats. The stories might sound perfect, but they too have faltered numerous times before they reached greatness
Start with what you have and where you are
Not every great achievement started great – they all have success and failure stories. If we keep waiting for the perfect situation to start or to be great even before we start, we get closer to failure. We have to start with what we have and from where we are. Along the journey, we will figure out how things work and make the best of the situation. All success stories are built this way.

You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great Quotes
There are numerous such beautiful quotes that talk about the power of starting to do something great. We will not be great when we start but greatness comes with time as we build ourselves and become stronger. It isn’t fair to expect to be great as we start. It isn’t fair to compare our start to someone else’s middle or finish. We will always be lagging. We have to find the right inspiration to start. This inspiration lies in the desire to do something, its purpose and what it means to us. From there, we can build a beautiful story.
Here are some quotes that give us the inspiration in similar lines as: You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” — Lao Tzu
Even the greatest was once a beginner – Muhammad Ali
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” — Robert Collier
“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” — John F. Kennedy
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” — Wayne Gretzky
“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” — Confucius
Of course, you will find failures along this journey, but we ought to learn from these mistakes and grow. We can’t plan all these failures, but we can decide how we act and improve. Once we start, its momentum will carry us forward and take us on to the paths of glory. However, we can’t map them all out right from the beginning. We will need to have faith in the process and keep up our hard work. And that’s the central meaning of this quote – you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.
Thanks for your thoughts Abhijit, ha ha yes one cannot hope to win without participating. Of course I really don’t know anyone who has won something on a lottery. Haven’t been that lucky yet 😉
I agree one has to make a start. Without buying a lottery ticket one cannot hope to win one. Similarly, without starting a journey one cannot hope to be great.
True enough Suman, there are a lot of other skills at play than sheer work alone. There is a certain amount of credibility associated about how much work is portrayed and unfortunately sometimes about how loud you shout about your achievements. I guess it is about a fair balance, work takes care of itself doesn’t seem to be the only working motto these days. You’ve got to do a lot more than that – marketing takes precedence 😊
That is the first hurdle one has to overcome … start and give 100%.
Nothing more and nothing less. Probably I will be naive if I say nothing more … In today’s world one has to do the politics and poly-tricks to backup the 100% effort and ensure those are not wasted!
