Tips for Getting into Medical School

This post is a contribution from one of our fellow readers, presenting you tips for getting into good medical schools.

If you are following the pursuit of becoming a doctor, you probably can’t wait to get started with your education to get your goal on track. One thing that you might be worried about, however, is getting into medical school. It’s true that some medical programs can be a bit difficult to get into but following these tips can help.

Focus on Your Grades While in Undergrad

When you’re working toward your bachelor’s degree, it’s important to pay close attention to your grades. When you apply for medical school, your GPA will probably be looked at. Keeping your grades up is one of the first things that you can do to help ensure that your application doesn’t get passed over when you apply for medical school.

Get Some Experience in the Medical Field

If possible, consider getting some type of experience in the medical field during your undergrad years. Shadowing a doctor, volunteering at a hospital or getting a part-time job working in a medical office can all be good ways to get some valuable experience. Not only can this look good on your medical school application, but it can help you get some practical experience for your future career.

Also, if you have other, not-so-traditional forms of experience in the medical field, such as if you have been a caregiver for an older family member, make sure that you note these things on your medical school applications as well.

Volunteer

It’s always a good thing to volunteer and perform community service in your local area, and it’s even more important when you want to get into medical school. This shows that you have a commitment to helping others and can help you stand apart above others when you submit your applications.

Pass the MCAT

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a computerized standardized test. Medical schools in the United States and elsewhere look at the scores on these tests when determining whether or not an applicant is a good fit for their programs, so acing the MCAT could be one of your top goals. Luckily, there are tons of resources and practice tests online that you can use to help you prepare.

Apply to Lots of Colleges

Even though you might have one specific college and medical school program in mind, it’s not a good idea to put all of your eggs in one basket. Applying to multiple medical schools is a good idea. Then, you can help increase your chances of getting into a program.

Take Your Time with Your Applications

Even though the process of filling out all of your college applications might be stressful, it’s important to take your time with them. When writing essays or letters for consideration, make an effort. Spending a little more time on your applications now can help you get the results that you want when you turn them in.

As you can see, there are steps that you can take now that can help you increase your chances of getting into medical school. Follow these tips, and you can help ensure that you are able to get into a good medical school so that you can achieve your dream of becoming a doctor someday.
