Take the stones people throw at you and build a monument
You can’t escape criticism no matter what you do. There are many reasons for people to criticise your work. These criticisms can sometimes have a devastating effect on us. However, if you’re clear about your journey and the reasons for doing what you do – these criticisms can act as a source of feedback. The trick however is to ensure that you don’t let this get to you and affect your motivation.
The essence of this quote by Ratan Tata is about using these criticisms to find a way forward. Some of it can bring out a sense of determination and grit in us. In other cases, we need to build the ability to ignore these critics and keep moving forward. The main thing to remember is that we can’t let our critics control our desire to dream and succeed.

None can destroy iron but rust, likewise none can destroy you but your mindset
Our mindset is the most powerful resource that we have. This mindset defines our ability to focus on the future and not be disturbed by our failings. Life is a long, continuous journey that demands consistent work. There will be situations or challenges which will question our commitment.
At these moments, we need to take some decisions. Our mindset helps us define what’s most important to us. We can either learn from a situation or run away – both of these are defined by our mindset. There’s no right or wrong answer, it is always about what works best for us. The best part of this quote is that – our mindset is in our control. We define what this mindset is and strengthen our character to reach this mindset.
We can be either made or destroyed by this mindset. It is unto you and me to define what happens next at each stage.
None can destroy iron, but its own rust can! Likewise, none can destroy a person but their mindset can
Ratan Tata inspiring words
Ups and downs in life are very important to keep us going, because a straight line even in an E.C.G means we are not alive
Imagine the number of business failures a person of Ratan Tata’s stature might have seen. It only makes me realise that these successes and failures are a part of our life. They keep happening. Maybe they are only events and outcomes. We create a label of either success or failure. To be honest, we only have a feedback at every occurrence.
Some of the outcomes are desired whereas some others aren’t. They naturally take the labels of success or failures. But the truth is as expressed in these inspirational words from Ratan Tata – ups and downs are important to keep us going. The main thing is to maintain perseverance and keep going. We can build from each of these small experiences to become the person we want to be.

I don’t believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right
Our moments of the decision have the ability to change our life completely. These decisions can either be actions or inactions with different outcomes. At the outset, this quote appears a bit arrogant. However, I was pleased to come across this video where Ratan Tata talks about the origin of this quote.
Although it is not technically a Ratan Tata quote, I think I need to talk about this owing to the popular misattribution to it. Decisions are hard to make, but they will define who we turn out to be. At these moments of decision, we ought to look into our own values and personality. If we find a way to make these decisions in consistency with our character – we can stand by them.
Of course, we will make wrong decisions and a few right ones. But the main thing to remember is that our decisions can change owing to the outcome. It is still in our control to make reparations and work towards what’s most important to us.
I don’t believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right
Ratan Tata inspirational words
All of us do not have equal talent, yet all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talents
This is the last quote by Ratan Tata in our collection. There are plenty more inspiring words by Mr.Tata in his book – I too had a dream (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53184702-i-too-had-a-dream)
The world isn’t fair – we’re not all created equal. There’s a disparity in opportunities, challenges and talent. However, our desire is not limited by these challenges right? We ought to find a way to listen to our dreams and make them come true. Our dreams occur for a reason and the onus is on us to make it work.
Everything else can be a great excuse for why something is not working out. Maybe it is not all supposed to work out. However, the best thing we can do is to keep giving our best. It will all culminate in a result that can look back at and be proud of. Our rationalisations or reasons don’t matter in the end. We have the opportunity to create outcomes even with our limitations. The journey can help us uncover some more results and outcomes in our favour.
All of us do not have equal talent, yet all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talents

Mr Ratan Tata is the most humble man I admire what he does for the the common people like he says make a difference he certainly has reminds me of my very humble papa if one person I would want to meet would be Mr Ratan Tata
Nice to hear from Tia, I recently saw a news post about him meeting some people and how humble his approach was. I am truly fascinated with the amount of inspiration this man has left behind and continues to inspire so many young business aspirants across the world. It is no joke to build an empire like that from one strength to another. True respect for this person and I am with you – I would absolutely love to meet this man

U r my role model #Ratan_sir
He is one hell of a role model to have Vikram. His book is also pretty interesting to pick, brings out some interesting details of life and inspiration.
I glade to inform who are following Ratan Tata quotes because i was inspired Quote No-3 i was read since 4 years back but still sometimes i remember that beautiful quote now a day’s who I am loving just passing information about this quote to read once anyway once again thanks to Ratan TATA
Great post! I can relate to the second quote. I believe “your thought makes your what you are”. So we need to focus and analyze our own thoughts and acts first before we talk about the external factors. Thanks for another inspiring post!
Thank you Moon :) That’s true, what happens to us is a small thing affecting compared to what we choose to believe.
I agree with him except on “I don’t believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right.”
Vinay, I guess there is some problem with your ‘how to take decision link’ It isn’t working.
Thank you Ravish..Thank you for updating me about the link, I have rectified it and hopefully it will not create any trouble now :).
And for the quote, actually that particular one is my favorite. I used to look at decision making in a completely different way before I started on entrepreneurship. Somehow now reading Tata’s quote makes complete sense :).. Guess I am so fascinated by the process of action that it somehow takes me by awe each time :)
I think, my interpretation of the quote is a bit different. For me, it appears saying, “I don’t bother what I do; what I do is always right.” It gives a sense of arrogance – an ego thing. That is why, Nano failed and he didn’t realize it.
Vinay, how do you interpret the quote?
Thats an interesting take Ravish. It does speak in a couple of levels. On the outset you are completely right, it does veil in a bit of over confidence which I hadnt noticed.
On the other hand, sometimes so much of time is spent on making a perfect decision that a lot of time is lost and there never is a perfect decision. Something or the other keeps going wrong. The quote tells me that we all know our ultimate goal and in the broader picture, the speed with which decisions are taken and the final goal is achieved takes a precedence. I think that is one view which Ratan Tata is trying to express here..
This man..I really admire him…the quotes provide inspiration for a lifetime and have positive effects even on a fatigued mind…
Thank you Maniparna :). He is one amazing man and has created an amazing network and a great name for the country. From the time they took over Jag and landrover, they have really put India on a very high note in the automobile sector :)
Great post Vinay, especially you took Ratan Tata for this post, it simply made me happy. He is a businessman who thinks about our nation first than anything else. I was happy when he announced about Tata Nano for middle class families. The concept was really awesome…
Thank you Alok :).. True, simplicity somehow escapes people when they reach such great heights. But a man of this stature does something of this regard and thinks of the common man, it really is something. I really wish Nano could have been a bigger success than now.. nevertheless it is one hell of an achievement :)
Mr.Ratan Tata is a great and successful businessman of india. He is a great humanitarian too. We must take his quotes as guidelines.
Thank you Sampat Kumari Ji :). true indeed, he garners that great respect as a complete man! :)
