It indeed is Maniparna. It is an unfortunate occurrence, thank god it has been in a way reduced in most of the places, but then again I guess there will always be a few who will want to hold on to their last straw of the feeling of superiority just so that they can feel superior in a petty way!! Well, for them there is no better punishment than the loss of knowing someone incredible! !

He he, thank you for sharing this experience Datta. I guess for some people, they are so tightly wound that probably nothing would ever make them civil or sensible. Maybe they want to be happy in their own bubble and feel good about themselves. It is such a funny word that whole sense of superiority – I sometimes wonder what would have happened to the world if it was ruled by the darker race instead of the fairer one. Maybe the whole attitude of color perception would change and the darker skin would assume the role of a fairer skin – an alternate theory which was put across during the 80’s I believe. Even if we look at all the old Indian texts from 10th century, every definition of beauty has darkness associated with it. Strange isn’t it?

Thank you Sunita. Well, I don’t completely understand the meaning of big daddy of white skin, but I think it is just too unfair to see people beyond their colour or race or background. This is the 21st century and we all feel a part of the globalised culture, but it feels so petty when people act like that and sometimes makes me question whether all this development and growth we associate ourselves with – what is the point if it doesn’t percolate to everyday life – what is education if it doesn’t teach the importance of tolerance to differences and mutual respect to people. It just feels like such a sham – or maybe these people need to be stripped out of their education decrees to teach equality.

Thank you for sharing this experience with us. It is a perfect example of racism and how people can be so insensitive to think that they are better just because they belong to a different colour. And it also borders on untouchability and I really wish there was a law where you could impose a penalty on such people. In a fair world, the shopkeeper would have requested her to leave the shop and deny her from purchasing anything cos they don’t want to do business with such cheap and annoying people who dare to think that they are better just because they come from a different lineage and part of the country or the world. It sucks that such people act like that and I think I can relate to what you are saying. I too am a south Indian who stayed in Delhi for about a year or so and I did experience something similar. But my experiences were a lot more subtle, it was really disturbing to say the least and the worst part is that it makes it even harder to fit in, in a new place where you want to feel welcome, you suddenly cant help but think of leaving that place. I mean Delhi is a real nice place, but such behaviour from such people make you somehow start having a bit of a discomfort about the place itself. It is such a shame that they can’t think beyond their stupid blockades..

True Maniparna, sometimes I wonder if it makes sense to confront them and shout at them. Then I realise – what is the point of all this – I mean that is not going to change their views, it just adds to the weight but never really solves the problem. If people cannot come out of their stupid stuck up notions, then they perhaps don’t deserve to know what the other people are made of. It is an unfortunate loss. I still love one of the recent videos which talks about a ‘racially superior’ person showing their discontent about being seated next to a person from a different race and how that person was moved to the first class since no one deserves to sit next to an intolerant person. I guess more such experiences can bring people to some of their senses and make them understand that people are beyond those silly stupid stuck up notions.
