Stronger the wind, stronger the trees – Willard Marriot

Good timber does not grow with ease, stronger the wind, stronger the trees: What is the purpose of our challenges? Does our life phenomenally improve with the quality of our challenges? It is natural for us to feel low with these challenges and curse them. But maybe there’s a message or two beyond these challenges and failures in life. We will try and explore some of these dimensions while explaining the meaning of this quote – good timber does not grow with ease!

It’s a great referential quote used here and can easily be generalized to a person and his/her challenges/opportunities/difficulties/adversities.

Meaning of Good Timber does not grow with ease, stronger the wind stronger the trees

This quote sends a small reminder about the quality of challenges in our life. If we ever face a situation where we feel low or down, maybe it is time to rethink the purpose of these challenges. Yes, they mean that we haven’t achieved our goal or something hasn’t worked. But what does that really mean? Let’s try and explore the meaning of Good Timber does not grow with ease in the sections below:

Failures are there to push us forward

This may sound like an overstatement, but failures have a purpose. They can’t douse our ambition – it might be a message about our approach or feedback that something hasn’t gone right. The stronger the wind, the stronger the tree is an indication that it is a part of our growing up process. As much as I hate that phrase, it is a small part of our wider journey in life right? Setbacks and challenges are a necessity to chisel us into the future that we want.

Quality of our challenges determine our opportunities

Our challenges must help us grow, and think beyond our limitations. If everything is too easy, what makes us grow beyond our apprehensions and fears? We can’t stay still and expect magical things in our life. Progress is the only thing that remains constant. We have to change before change is forced upon us. These challenges are a way of telling us that something is not working. We can choose to fight for petty challenges or push ourselves forward raising the quality of our challenges. It defines the level at which you’re playing the game as a metaphor.

Gratitude for the wind

I agree that it sounds like a cliche to talk about happiness and gratitude. But the power of gratitude for our challenges can take us forward- help us think beyond the sorry feeling that something is not working for us. Things are wrong, they are hurtful etc. But those may just be facts – we can’t stay there forever. We ought to keep moving and thankfulness is a great way to coach ourselves to move forward. When we can be thankful for all the things that work for us – why not the ones that challenge us right?

The purpose of this quote is to make us think and help us grow. If these challenges help us grow, then it is a massive purpose achieved isn’t it?
