Venture outside your comfort zone, the rewards are worth it meaning

Sometimes, our dreams are too big to compromise for our fears. The comfort zone represents a safe space. Fear doesn’t venture here because we’re comfortable and we can predict our outcomes. Although it can keep us happy, this comfort zone can be limiting in life. The phrase “venture outside your comfort zone, the rewards are worth it says that we need to take risks. These risks are uncomfortable and will even make us question our confidence.

But how else will we grow if we don’t experiment and challenge ourselves? It will be uncomfortable, but nothing worthwhile was ever easy, right? These difficulties will pave a path for our future. The comfort zone cannot pull us back. Instead, it can be a safe space that we can gain confidence from. But yet, we have to take steps to move forward from it and pursue our desires.

Why is the comfort zone difficult to venture out of?

The comfort zone is called that for a reason. The comfort zone is a beautiful place. It is simple, easy and predictable. It plays to your strengths where you don’t have to push yourself. Although it is comfortable and easy, it raises the question – maybe it is too safe. It reminds me of the quote from Einstein – a ship is always safe at the shore.

In short, the comfort zone keeps life simple and easy. But, it also limits the ability and extent of our life. If we don’t go beyond it and be adventurous, we’ll never get to know what our life is capable of. It is fine if we don’t want to know. But if you’re ambitious and want to explore, then perhaps it is time to find a way to venture out of the comfort zone.

5 Steps to move forward from the comfort zone?

There is no simple answer to this. But one thing I know is that we have to prepare for moving away from comfort zone. You will find yourself tracing back to the comfort of predictability. But discomfort is very helpful, it helps us grow.

The best way to get started is by taking small steps. We ought to start small, and find measurable successes. This helps build our confidence in venturing out of the comfort zone. Once we have gained sufficient traction, we can take big steps and move forward. Or, if you’re feeling particularly brave, you can just jump in. But if you do so, make sure that you’re prepared for the consequences, they might be harsher than you’d have imagined at first.

1) Ask yourself – Am I doing anything better?

– Don’t tell me or yourself that you don’t have time. That is not the question – Are you doing anything better. If the answer is no, then maybe it makes sense to pick it up. The worst that can happen is that you may fail at it and in return you get some experience which is still better than doing nothing!

2) What do you stand to lose?

Every decision comes with a few wins and losses. Find out what you stand to lose by moving out of your comfort zone. The trick is to make sure that your life is not at risk. If you manage your risks and losses, it makes this journey of moving away and taking risks easier.

3) What is it that you might enjoy in this?

What can you enjoy in this experience by venturing out of the comfort zone? What can you use in the future? Is it a field you would like to know something in? If the answer is yes to any of these, then all the more reason to do it.

4) What is it that you lose?

Again just time is not a justifiable answer. Sometimes money too is not a justified answer. If what you gain out of it is more than what you lose, then it is time that you step out of that comfort zone.

5) Lessons from success and failures

If not anything, you will gain an amazing story out of it which can surely entertain you and broaden your horizon about sense of humor. The moment you are in a place where you can laugh about your follies, success is closer than you think.

These are our top 5 tips about stepping out of your comfort zone. Do write to us about your experiences of stepping out of your comfort zone, we would love to hear some stories :).

  3. I really like number two. If you have nothing to lose then you should definitely do it. And if you think you won’t get anything out of it, you actually will. You can gain more confidence, and be happier with yourself.

    1. True Maniparna. Comfort zone is kinda nice to settle down for a while, but it is a big trap sometimes and sometimes time goes off so fast that even the comfort zone starts getting really uncomfortable. So much for the irony eh? ;)

  4. Have you ever noticed that how almost all the protagonists of all cultures – Hensel and Gretel, Beauty, Snow-white, Ram, Pandavas… have to go through a wood/forest/exile/out of their comfort zone and by comfort I mean routine here, and all of them emerge out better and braver.. So, I agree with your points here Vinay :) A nice post :)

    1. Ha ha ha I didnt quite catch on the forest and coming out of it part. Now that you mention it, I can see it, they all have a pattern :).. Thank you Kokila, it is good to be back and it is great to be seeing your thoughts here. I certainly missed interacting with you people :)..

        1. :) Good to have you back too. Will look forward to more of your posts and of course more interaction :).. I have found that these interactions have thoroughly helped in coming up with more posts and topics for the site and of course helped elevate the level of thought :)..
