Matthew O’Reilly: When You Are About To Die

Matthew O’Reilly: When You Are About To Die

This is not our favorite topic to talk about any day but the video has so much to give us that it makes sense spending a few minutes on this. Matthew O’Reilly talks about his experience with the patients who are about to die.Matthew O’Reilly is a veteran emergency medical technician in New York. He has spent a lot of his life at the emergency unit and his experience has thought him a better way of life. He features in the TED talks to share with us his experience which might help us lead a better life.

Matthew O’Reilly: What Most People Say When They Know They Are About To Die – 3 Patterns he talks about :

1st Pattern – Ask for forgiveness

The mind knows the right and the wrong yet we have to struggle a lot to choose the right. It ain’t always easy. The one thing every single person crave for in this world is love and to know we were not there for someone for some reason which was momentarily important but doesn’t make sense years later can be a true pain. It’s easier to forgive someone who hurt us but it tough to forgive oneself. We get plenty of opportunities to rectify our mistakes and forgive ourselves and others, lets rectify now, for the utmost inner satisfaction.

2nd Pattern – Need for remembrance

How wonderful it feels to be remembered by people for way you made them feel. If you could give someone the best gift, it would be to make that someone feel loved and if that someone could give us something very valuable it would be the joy in there eyes because of you. I am sure we all want to be remembered for the acts we did , happiness we spread and the loved we shared.

3rd pattern – If their life has meaning

The the phase of life when we search for our real purpose is the most troubling yet the most fascinating period of life. We all go through this and we all realise how important it is. I sometimes wonder if I would ever know my real purpose. I get tired thinking, I see others and ask myself “How easily they discovered theirs” but I Know, that’s not the truth. They too struggle. No one knows what exactly he wants in life, every little desire he has becomes his dream for life and every dream becomes his guideline and every act he does defines his purpose of life.

Sometimes we associate a satisfactory life to the great deeds we do . We expect a lot from ourselves without realising how little it takes to feel happy and satisfied. I have to write a few lines of Ralp Waldo Emerson here

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child,a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
