It is not about How Hard You Hit But Keep Moving Forward-Rocky Balboa

It is not about how hard you hit: I love this quote from Rocky. The main themes from this quote are perseverance, and the ability to react and respond to failure. Most times, motivational quotes are guilty of focusing on a short-term win. However, this quote makes you focus on the big picture – success is not about a single isolated experience. Success is a continuous, never-ending process. It is not just about success or failure but the person we become in the process.

Success and failure are probably too small and they are just events. Our attitude and character define this approach and serve us in the long run. This is one of the most powerful quotes from the movie Rocky and one of my favourites because it keeps talking about perseverance and the focus on character building.

It is Not about How Hard You Hit, But It is about How many times You Can get Hit and Keep Moving Forward

– Rocky Balboa

It is not about how hard you can hit

It is not about our effort but the way we tackle life. Life doesn’t always give us what we want – even with the best efforts. In these situations we have to find a way to get back up again and persevere. Now, it is easy for people to ask us to keep working hard. But it takes enormous belief and conviction to keep working when things don’t work in your favour. In such situations, we have to dig deeper into our source of strength. It is not about how hard you can hit, but about the strength to keep moving forward even when you are hurt.

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!

Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!

The full quote of this quote is:

Rocky Balboa Keep moving forward

Such is the effect of a powerful quote – It can kick us into action to do something. Talking alone is cheap. And no wonder we love this quote for the exact same reasons – the kick in the right place.

After a while even realise that the reasons for failure don’t matter. No one really cares about it. Ultimately, if you want the results, you just have to accept what has come your way. If you still feel passionate about the goal – change your approach. The crux of this quote says – to persevere – don’t stop. It is not about how hard you hit, but what you keep doing to move forward.

That’s how winning is done

We don’t care about the reasons as to why something did not happen. The doggedness within us says – Screw it, I want this to happen. I will figure out what went wrong and set things right. We say this not because we think we are great. It is because we feel so strongly about the goal we are after. Such is the power of our goal and resolve. If it is important enough, we have to face feedback and find a way to move ahead.

For it is way too easy to feel sorry for oneself and it is kinda nice to get that sympathy from people around us. But how long are we going to survive on that? We need to find a way to get out of that phase before we start detesting the attention and detesting ourselves. The simplest way ahead is to sulk about it a bit and then get back to what can take you forward. And that is in its entirety the beauty of this quote here, taking a hit and keep moving forward for all that makes sense is to keep moving forward cos we owe it to the dream!

  4. Thank you Kashpal :). True that, there are a hundred different things that can stop us and question our abilities. We don’t have much of a choice to stand up to them and find a way out of that. After all, it is our lives and we gotta make the best of the situation. That will be the only way out I believe..

  5. ” The simplest way ahead is to sulk about it a bit and then get back to what can take you forward.” Well said. Most important is to move on in life.

  6. That’s a very good question Maitreni. I do agree on the precision idea, but there is a slight danger of spending too much time on preparation than actually acting out which kinda holds back the entire process. I love this quote because of the idea of persistence it projects, quite simply about getting up in the face of failure and saying that I am stronger than that and making it count. That is something incredible I would like to believe..
