Choose the words you say to yourself carefully

Choose the words you say to yourself carefully: What do our definitions mean? Are we only restricted by the words that we use to define ourselves? Or do we have the capability well beyond these words and what they mean? This article is all about identifying what we use to define ourselves. How do we use the words that describe our characteristics or features? And most importantly, are they limiting or elevating?

Defining yourself

Defining yourself relates to who you are as a person. Let’s take a step further and dig into what this means and tells about your values, beliefs and convictions. Does a simple phrase of who you are and what you do perform justice to your entire personality? I think sometimes we undermine the answer to a question as simple as defining yourself.

The phrase “define yourself” means to determine or describe who you are as a person, in terms of your beliefs, values, personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, and life experiences. It involves taking a critical look at yourself, examining your thoughts and actions, and identifying the characteristics that make you unique.

Defining yourself demands that you look inward. In fact, take some time to introspect and ask that question of who you are as a person. This goes beyond your physical appearances, it talks about your beliefs, thoughts and sometimes even your dreams. You see, it has such an expanded meaning that defining yourself is not a simple exercise at all. It can be quite complicated and keep changing with time. And isn’t that the beauty of it as well?

Change is indeed one of the most consistent things in us. Why shouldn’t it apply to our beliefs and values as long as we are growing?

What are the characteristics of self-definition?

While we talk about answering the question – define yourself, we need to identify the characteristics that help us define ourselves. Some areas to think about in the characteristics to define yourself are:

  • Passions, interests – this can also include hobbies, what gets you excited
  • Your experiences, story – where you come from, culture, background etc
  • Your values that have shaped you and continue to influence you

What I love about the characteristics to define ourselves is the type of things we can think about to express our characteristics.

  2. Thank you Sheeba. I fell in love with the quote the moment I saw it. Couldn’t resist sharing.

Sometimes I believe the trend to live to set definitions makes me wonder, if we are limiting ourselves in the thought process itself, the action would be even more limited and the result much more than that!

    Sort of a vicious cycle!!

  3. Thank you Bushra :).

Most times were told think think and define. Sometimes it makes me feel that in the whole process we actually lose the sight of what is really very important. To act and go beyond the limits !
