Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions

– Hāfez

We have been very vocal when it comes to writing about fear. Drawing from our previous post – 11 Practical Steps to Overcoming Fears, we did make an elaborate commentary about why it is bad and the things we have to go through in getting rid of them. Although everyone says fear is bad, there is a good side to it as well – it is a great motivator especially to prevent us from making a mistake. It is only when it gets out of hand that it becomes more daunting and putting us down.

The way we see it, each emotion has its own place. As Anthony Robbins says in one of his seminars – Every emotion is a call to action – it is sending out a signal about a situation or an outcome. And fear is an emotion which can give us a signal about an impending danger. That is exactly the reason why Will Smith’s quote – Fear is not real but danger is makes absolute sense to us. Fear on the other hand is our interpretation of the situation. More often than not, it happens to pull us down – not because fear is bad but because we seem to focus on the wrong side of the fear. Instead if we look at it the right way, then it can make a massive difference to the way we look at challenges in life.

We are not going to preach here how bad fear is and why it is necessary to get rid of it. We are not even going to talk about the steps you need to take to start feeling comfortable about it. But I don’t think any of us can deny the fact about fear as established in this quote. It is one emotion which has the capacity to be pervasive beyond the situation and can strongly impact our other actions as well. Although it can help us focus in the right direction, sometimes it also has a strong way of keeping us obsessed about it. The moment we are obsessed about a fear, it also spreads on to the things we are very confident about, thus pulling down our entire productivity.

All of us really know why fear is so bad and our arch nemesis. But what holds us back from getting over them? Is it because of the possibility of things going wrong? Is it because it can further weaken us? – Imagine what it can do if we work through it and end with a success. That way, we will be in a position to get rid of the fear once in for all. Of course it all feels quite hypothetical and farfetched, but there is a sense of adventure in actually consciously trying to get over these fears of ours.

Our agenda through the process is not to stand up on the pedestal and say that we are fearless. Our agenda is to say that – Sure, we all are scared, but what we do about it matters a little more than being afraid of it! And that pretty much defines it all. These were our thoughts on fear having its own room in the house to say.

We would love your critical approach on the quote, after all we all are after the truth that makes most sense to us. Please do share your views below.

  1. Thank you Maitreni, I am happy that this new quote section is picking well and getting such good response :). I have always been a big fan of the quotes, I feel that they are extremely powerful snippets to put us into a train of thought. And if something productive comes out of that , then nothing better than that :)

  2. Thank you Jyoti. That is a nice quote from Roosevelt, nothing to fear but fear itself. Happy you liked the post, you put it on the spot – we cannot let fear cripple us, the moment we do that, we lose control and have that leading our life than the other way round. That would be quite a disaster wouldn’t it?!

  3. And once you conquer this demon called fear, you can handle the biggest obstacles in life with your will power. Thanks for this motivational dose of the day Vinay. Well explained. :)

  4. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself ~ Roosevelt. Your write-up is apt. Fear is not real. It is just our thoughts and it’s up to us to not allow Fear cripple us.

  5. Thank you Shaivi :).. I think it is one of the most common things which almost every one of us faces. Quite a quintessential factor to overcome and realise the success we deserve :)

  6. Thank you Jyotirmoy, nice to know that you liked the post :).. Thank you for sharing a quote, love it to hear more quotes, makes it so much more lively :)

  7. Thank you Chaitali for the kind words. I like the quote, it also reminds me of one Mark Twain’s quotes – “I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”.. Such a gentle reminder of sense and sensibility isn’t it ? :)
