Eid-al-Adha : Upholding The Value of Self-Denial
Islam is the second most followed religion in the world with more than 1.5 billion followers. The world celebrates Eid-al-Adha today and you come across Eid Mubarak wishes everywhere meaning “blessed Eid”
Every religion has a beauty and thousands of unheard stories of their customs and rituals. On this special occasion of Eid let’s look into the significance and the purpose of celebration.
What’s Eid-al-Adha?
Eid-al-Adha is known as a greater Eid. We hear about another Eid which falls at the end of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr meaning festival of breaking the fast.
Eid-al-Adha is the also known as the Feast of Sacrifice.
Why is Eid-al-Adha celebrated?
It commemorates the willingness of Allah’s devotee Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to Allah. After witnessing the unconditional devotion of his devotee Allah gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead of his son, Ishmael.
The festival is believed as the time to learn the value of self-denial by making a sacrifice of something living to God.
When is Eid-al-Adha celebrated?
At the end of the religious journey that takes Muslims to the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia (the greatest religious observance in Islam)
How is Eid-al-Adha celebrated?
They sacrifice goat to Allah. Meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. Family retains one third of it, the other one third is shared among friends and relatives and the remaining one third is given to the poor and needy.
What’s the significance of Eid-al-Adha?
The significance of the festival is to recall the importance of one’s intention for God, the sacrifice. It is an act that reminds that sacrifice is greater than killing and hence they share food with the poor and needy.
The purpose of spreading joy by sharing food with the poor, the time of remembering the great sacrifice of the devotee and the time to celebrate the completion of journey to Mecca makes the festival joyous and delightful. Wishing you all happy Eid.
