Don’t Speak Unless You Can Improve Silence

Don’t Speak Unless You Can Improve Silence: In a world where talking is rated as one of the top skills, I want to talk about silence today. Most times, silence is misunderstood as weakness or someone not having an opinion. However, it has a beautiful role to play, if particularly positioned to add value to a conversation. That’s what today’s quote is all about – the value of silence and making a difference in a conversation.

“Don’t speak unless you can improve silence”

The driving thought in this quote are thoughts about contribution. In any conversation, the first key question to ask is – what can I add value to? And how can that influence the quality of this conversation. Remember, it is easy to judge and over analyse a situation. But what we’re asking here is about thinking before you speak. And thinking productively so that the quality of your communication is far richer and impactful. (Related: Active listening)

Unfortunately, the majority of our role models are great speakers. These can be leaders of the previous era or today’s politicians. You can see that speech plays an important role in their works. Equally, we’re in a fortunate place today where the quality of silent people is also respected and recognised. In some ways, there is less pressure for you to keep talking.

These lead you into circumstances of modelling your silence or even using it for your advantage in a good conversation. Speaking on behalf of the introverts – I love silence – it just helps me regain my energy. At the same time, I like people who talk so that I can gather ideas and define what I can add value to. Complicated right? But that’s simply the way my brain works. (Related – Difference between introverts and extroverts)

I believe an important part of your silence or communication is in understanding your strengths and leveraging them. There is no point in forcing yourself to be silent when your preference is to talk and vice versa. You have to look within and probably identify

  • What value can you add to the conversation?
  • Does your input allow others to contribute?
  • Purpose of your statements

These thoughts help you direct the quality and direction of a conversation which leads us to the quote:

Don’t speak unless you can improve silence- Talking is overrated

My first gut reaction says – YES, talking is overrated. There are times where I yearn for silence and want to be just kept to myself. At the same time, I need to be fair to extroverts as well who tend to think as they talk. I can’t force all comms to just suit my preference.

The truth is – these conversation pointers help – they make important points enabling me to think of valuable responses. Being an introvert, these points give me an opportunity to observe and get an overview of the situation. In some ways, I can recognise this as a skill that has given me good results in the past.

This doesn’t mean that talking is overrated or silence is the best answer. The central theme of this quote comes back to improving the quality of conversation or value addition. If we are not adding any value – both silence and talking are useless.

  1. Lovely quotes “All that glitters is not gold, and all that talks is not intelligent too, sometimes the idiots talk a lot more than the intelligent ones” :). Hats off to you for such a great and wonderful post.

  2. Thank you Satish. Of those were wonderful days, we did not have the fear of someone judging us or pulling us down. It was a bountiful time. It is only now that we think that we have grown old and become mature and not make a fool of ourselves. Ironically it happens whether we talk or not :) :)

  3. I love this last quote. All that glitters is not gold, and all that talks is not intelligent too, sometimes the idiots talk a lot more than the intelligent ones. Well expressed.

  4. A Very Interesting piece of writing. My take on this is that one need to learn when to speak and when to choose silence. However, I really miss the childhood days when one can speak whatever comes to his/her mind, when we grow things change and sometimes we step back from saying what is needed to be said at the moment.

I’m a stauch supporter of this quote. :-D I prefer to listen and to speak less… :-P In fact, I wrote a poem a few days ago on silence… :-)

  6. The tittle is itself is so emphatic Vinay :) I too believe that silence speaks way beyond words can express. You need to realize every space between the talks that counts to make the conversation worth it. Very well presented. Kudos to thoughts!
