5 Things to Keep in Mind while Training Someone

Training

Training my juniors is something that I have enjoyed but what scares me is the launching. It happened a few times that I was unsure to end their training period not because they weren’t ready, I was not ready! This always made me extend their training period from 20 days to more than a month and sometimes months

This increased my work pressure and naturally reflected in a certain amount of time and money loss for the company. Wondering what to do, I started experimenting with the training module, it didn’t work. I experimented with the being more strict and spending more time in training, neither did it work.

After several attempts, one thing brought in a huge difference “being confident about others”  It’s a very simple thing, everyone knows about it but it’s not easy to be confident about someone, maybe that’s what is needed at times.

Here are the 5 things which go along with showing enough confidence. Be it any kind of training.

1.Believe in them

Our mind is modeled to seek for a trust factory before bestowing its belief. More often we tend to not believe in the trainees and the colleagues until a few months.

What we don’t realize is that a fresher does also not believe us.  Maybe when you extend a hand of belief and confidence he feels he is at the right place.

2. Let them make mistakes

Yes, let them make mistakes because you too did it.

I have always found it easy to identify mistakes in others and naturally we all tend to do it. Let’s hold ourselves, let’s give them the freedom to make some mistakes and learn from it.

But yeah, you have to draw a boundary for the kind of mistakes you will allow them to do.

3. Let them experiment

Give them an option. Let them experiment. If one method doesn’t suit them let them try the other, let them know they can choose something.

I understand, certain things have to be handled in certain ways. For the certain other things there are other approaches too, maybe we are not aware of it or maybe we are not brave enough to experiment it.

Give them a chance; let them see what it is to work on something with their approach and your approach. Let them choose the best approach.

4. Spend more time working together

Work together. Sometimes it is time consuming and at times it is time conserving. Let them feel they have your support and interest to help them resolve their challenges.

By working together, you are not just helping them get better at something but you are also building a good relationship as colleagues

5. Talk more often

Talk to them. Talk about their challenges. It’s when you talk more you understand what the other person is going through. Try to understand them and build in that confidence which they are hesitant to see in them. Talk about the problem and not about the result; in this way it makes you reliable to them and you become a person with concern who they can look up to discuss their difficulties.

Set a comfort zone for them, so that they can walk up to you any day to discuss their challenges and seek your guidance.

Overall, what I found was that I was looking for perfection. I know I was an idiot! We clearly understand neither of us is perfect but when it comes to another person we expect it to be perfect. Isn’t it too much?

I know, all of you out there know all the points listed here, it is just that we don’t care much about it. Maybe we should… and maybe it will help them train better.
