Ratan Tata : Business with a purpose

Ratan Tata, the name breathes inspiration to budding entrepreneurs, businessmen and a sense of pride to every Indian. The list of achievements go far and wide from the worlds cheapest car to acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover; from the honorary doctorates to the Padmavibhushan – the second highest civilian award. Above all, the man has been known for his principles and his achievements in the field of business and humanity.

Today, we present you with 5 fiery quotes from Ratan Tata:

Ratan Tata Quotes 1

Take the stones people throw at you and use them to build a monument.

You find people de-motivating you, discouraging you at all levels of life. There are people who title you as “lucky” when you are successful, you find all sorts of them.

You can’t stop at each one of them to explain your journey or allow them control your dreams.

The best thing you can do is to ignore them or simply convert every discouragement into motivation. You know what you want to do with life and in the end you will end up giving an answer to all these people.

You need not succumb to the urgency, instead look at what you want to do and how you want to lead your life – the other idiots sometimes don’t really matter!

Ratan Tata Quotes 2

None can destroy iron, but its own rust can! Likewise, none can destroy a person, but its own mindset can..

We complain about the external factors affecting our dreams but mostly all the destructive factors are within. It’s what you believe and what you choose to believe shapes you.

Of course the other factors around you act as catalysts, they make you rethink what you do, they stop you, they challenge you and they even make you wonder. If that was the case, the Ratan Tatas, Dhirubhai Ambanis, Laxmi Mittals would have never been born.

It is something internal that has driven this great amount of success. If we keep waiting for reasons and people to point fingers at, we will find thousands of them, but we are not here for the reasons, we are here for the results.

Ratan Tata Quotes 3

ratan tata, ratan tata quotes, ratan tata ups and downs in life

Ups and downs in life are very important to keep us going, because a straight line even in an E.C.G. means we are not alive.

Imagine a life where nothing happens away from your plan – a perfect straight line without any deviations. Wouldn’t that be really dull and boring?

What stories would you tell your friends, your grandchildren? Where is your growth? How did you handle your challenges?

If life were as simple as a plan, then there really isn’t much to be proud of is there? Sometimes it just means that you did not challenge yourself enough.

So quit, complaining about what is wrong – it is wrong for a reason, we all have our highs and lows. And sometimes we have our lows – one after the other.

But we are better than that, we are stronger than that and we shall prove it so.

Ratan Tata Quotes 4

ratan tata quotes, ratan tata on decisions, ratan tata inspiration

I don’t believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right.

This is perhaps my favourite quote in this list of Ratan Tata.

How do you take a decision? As I recall this is what I used to do when someone asked me to take a decision –

I wanted to be perfect – just like everyone else. So I would spend days together in formulating a plan.

Once I did that, I would go out to ask people what they thought of the plan – you know to get a feedback and work on it. And naturally I would end up getting conflicting opinions which left me confused and wondered who I should really ask for advice. Here are the 6 peculiar people who advice you.

And after this, I would rework on my plan and end up being criticized again.

Before I knew it, I would realize that it was damn too late and the moment has passed.

I guess something we really miss out on is the timing of a perfect decision. I agree that we all want to be right, but the cost of a perfect decision sometimes is that the decision becomes irrelevant. I guess the lesson is to be quick to take a decision and no matter which one we take, it will never be perfect.

Things will go wrong, but we ought to find ways to make it work. As Ratan Tata says – take a decision and then make it right, no point in pondering over the perfect scenario. And FYI – here are the 7 Silly Stages To Perfect Decision Making

Ratan Tata Quotes 5

All of us do not have equal talent yet all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talents.

Ever heard of telling this to yourself – LIFE IS UNFAIR?!

I know I have and I am completely with you. Life isn’t fair and nowhere in our birth certificate was it promised to be fair.

I was reading somewhere – the only thing you are given in equal amount in the world is time. We don’t have equal opportunities, we don’t have equal resources and we don’t have equal guidance or capacity or talent or what not. I can go on with this list.

But we do have that equal 24Hrs a day and if we put ourselves to it, we can make wonders.

Of course, nothing is ever going to be easy, but we all have our own variety of opportunities. Granted that grass always looks greener on the other side, but truth is that we look at only the positive frame, only the things we lack.

Often we miss out on what we have and what gives us a great opportunity to achieve our goals.

So… Instead of worrying or complaining about what we don’t have, why not shift focus and look at what you really do and how you can use it to realize your goals of life.

Like Bruce Lee says  “To hell with circumstances, I create opportunities”

  1. Great post Vinay, especially you took Ratan Tata for this post, it simply made me happy. He is a businessman who thinks about our nation first than anything else. I was happy when he announced about Tata Nano for middle class families. The concept was really awesome…

    1. Thank you Alok :).. True, simplicity somehow escapes people when they reach such great heights. But a man of this stature does something of this regard and thinks of the common man, it really is something. I really wish Nano could have been a bigger success than now.. nevertheless it is one hell of an achievement 🙂

  2. This man..I really admire him…the quotes provide inspiration for a lifetime and have positive effects even on a fatigued mind…

    1. Thank you Maniparna :). He is one amazing man and has created an amazing network and a great name for the country. From the time they took over Jag and landrover, they have really put India on a very high note in the automobile sector 🙂

  3. I agree with him except on “I don’t believe in taking right decisions, I take decisions and then make them right.”

Vinay, I guess there is some problem with your ‘how to take decision link’ It isn’t working.

    1. Thank you Ravish..Thank you for updating me about the link, I have rectified it and hopefully it will not create any trouble now :).

And for the quote, actually that particular one is my favorite. I used to look at decision making in a completely different way before I started on entrepreneurship. Somehow now reading Tata’s quote makes complete sense :).. Guess I am so fascinated by the process of action that it somehow takes me by awe each time 🙂

      1. I think, my interpretation of the quote is a bit different. For me, it appears saying, “I don’t bother what I do; what I do is always right.” It gives a sense of arrogance – an ego thing. That is why, Nano failed and he didn’t realize it.

Vinay, how do you interpret the quote?

        1. Thats an interesting take Ravish. It does speak in a couple of levels. On the outset you are completely right, it does veil in a bit of over confidence which I hadnt noticed.

On the other hand, sometimes so much of time is spent on making a perfect decision that a lot of time is lost and there never is a perfect decision. Something or the other keeps going wrong. The quote tells me that we all know our ultimate goal and in the broader picture, the speed with which decisions are taken and the final goal is achieved takes a precedence. I think that is one view which Ratan Tata is trying to express here..

  4. Great post! I can relate to the second quote. I believe “your thought makes your what you are”. So we need to focus and analyze our own thoughts and acts first before we talk about the external factors. Thanks for another inspiring post!

  5. I glade to inform who are following Ratan Tata quotes because i was inspired Quote No-3 i was read since 4 years back but still sometimes i remember that beautiful quote now a day’s who I am loving just passing information about this quote to read once anyway once again thanks to Ratan TATA
