5 Inspiring Quotes From Mary Kom

Posted on Posted in A-Z, Motivational Quotes

I was thrilled to see the poster release of the movie Mary Kom. Finally it really feels like the lady who deserved a lot is getting atleast something in this dimension :).

Mary Kom , the five-time World Boxing champion and the only woman boxer to have won a medal for India is an outstanding inspiration and a someone to look up to. We were looking up a  few facts about her and couldn’t stop ourselves from sharing the same with you. For someone born in a poor family, started working at a very young age and going against all the odds to get into a lesser popular sport and make it to the olympics and not just making it there but winning as well is an extraordinary achievement! Today she stands as a beacon of physical and more importantly emotional strength. Here are a few quotes from her:

Quote 1:

People used to say that boxing is for men and not for women and I thought I will show them some day. I promised myself and I proved myself.

For a society where a few people still impose a set of career options for women and mostly discourage her to chase her dreams once married is sure to say words like this. I am sure most of the ladies including me have heard our relatives or parents giving us a career advise on what’s best and what not for us. It takes a lot of courage and determination to break through such norms of the society and chase the dreams which means the most to us.

 Quote 2:

If I, being a mother of two, can win a medal, so can you all. Take me as an example and don`t give up.

It’s not an easy task for a woman to maintain her personal and professional life and a few of us tend to lose the balance now and then but we still strive hard to balance it and give the best to the family. I am sure the working ladies will agree with me on this. When we see woman like Mary Kom, a mother of twins who can go out practicing every day, sweat out, work hard, give her everything to chase her passion then what’s stopping us?

Quote 3:

It has been a tough journey. I carried on with the support of family and friends. Despite the loss today, I am satisfied with the way I performed.

Most often we believe that the result itself is the greatest verdict of the struggle but it’s mostly the journey of evolving as a person is what defines the meaning of success. This reminds of a quote which says “Success lies in journey and not destination”, it is who you are and what you get to become over what you get which stands taller than everything else.

Quote 4:

Everyone is scared and asking me questions if I am going to quit. I want to tell them that don’t worry; I am not retiring and will continue.

Well her lines made me wonder if people are worried not to see future women boxers. For a country obsessed with cricket a sport like this needs a lot of support and encouragement. Probably it is easier to be motivated for either cricket or a popular sport where people provide enough extrinsic one. This makes me respect Mary Kom a lot more cos it means a lot more internal strength and inspiration that has driven her this far.

Quote 5:

I do not only rely on my technique or strength but also on my mind.

We all know of boxing as a physical game which requires a lot of physical strength and technique. But it is very inspiring to hear a boxer say this. It is the will that takes you far and beyond. It’s the will to throw that one last punch when you feel that you are about to fall and that makes all the difference.

If you are interested in knowing more about her, we would highly recommend her autobiography Unbreakable which talks about the relentless struggle and passion of Mark Kom.

  1. She’s definitely a woman of extraordinary resilience. You’re right, if a mother of twins can go ahead and achieve her unusual dream as per the cricket obsessed country that we live in…practically anyone can do what they wish to, with the power of their will.
Highly inspirational post Vinay. Loved it.

    1. Thank you Vinodinii. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the post :). I am highly inspired by the amount of challenges these people face and they keep going on. No matter what great sounding words we use – motivation, inspiration, perspiration, perseverance, they all seem so small in front of them!

  2. Inspiring post ! …recently I had come across an article depicting fitness and the message therein was sort of this: ‘neither be fat nor thin… be Mary Kom !!’ …True.

  3. True.. when you think about it, we all should imbibe these five points in us.. most of us try to but we never adhere to it.. hats off to her

    1. Thank you Kokila :).. It was really lovely doing the research about her. . So much we did not know and so much which is not talked about. A bounty of inspiration indeed 🙂
