Also did you say that you would certainly do it, if only you were able to avoid unhealthy food? Well, here is a post below which will help food to keep you in shape :)

Junk Food- 10 Things You Should Do To Avoid Them

1) WHY DO WE EAT JUNK?

Well, the simplest plain answer is that it is damn tasty! It is yummy and perfect for the weather and the taste dances on your palate and nothing else can make you feel that good. Being a foodie, I am completely on board with you on this. But, there is always one common challenge for every foodie – HOW TO STAY IN SHAPE and yet eat my junk food? Well, let us try and answer those questions a bit below

Apart from these, one of the reasons I have often heard is – “I get bored”, “I am stressed”, “I have nothing else to do”, “I am not feeling good about Myself” and so on.. In other words, we prefer to call it stress eating. Ask yourself if you have ever done that, I know I have!

2) WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE JUNK?

Is it the fried yummy stuff or the sweets which are dipped in sugar? What makes you go for the second serving and then the third and so on? Why do you love them so much?

Other common answer is that – It makes you feel good, it makes you feel the true essence of who you are, a food lover, a connoisseur of great food and would do anything for it. But more importantly it makes you feel good, well food does have that power.

3) HOW MUCH OF IT IS UNHEALTHY?

Well, if you said all of it is, then welcome aboard, I think we are headed somewhere with this post now. If you think all or most of your food habit is junk or the ones you know is not that great for your health, then perhaps it is time to think of ways to avoid them.

But it is an annoying feeling to be on a diet, so many others seem to be enjoying food to the core and you are the only one who is cast aside cos you want to stay fit. Sometimes it even casts you away from the social circle. Well, I am not going to talk to you about the perfect diet and what you should eat and what you should not, I am going to talk about the simple silly stuff we can do to make it better.

4) WHAT TO HAVE AND WHEN

Identify your food routine. The first step to any change is in identifying the pattern and how much of it we do it consciously and how many of them we do inadvertently. It is very important to take care of the inadvertent ones because those are the ones you can act upon right away and start making the difference.

Identify your food pattern, is it a breakfast, lunch and dinner routine? If that is the case, identify when you eat apart from that, we shall come to the core meals of the day a little  later in this segment. Also identify what you eat and make a note as to what is important of that and what is not, what you enjoy and what you eat just for the sake of eating. We can eliminate the “For the sake of it food” first and then come to the enjoyable ones.

5) THE BASICS WE DON’T USUALLY SEE

The salads, the fruits and the proteins are the three basic parts of a diet we normally have and most times a little fat too. We all know that excessive eating of sweets gets converted into fat because additional sugar is naturally converted into fat and it starts forming a spare tyre around the stomach. Apart from these, it is also important to note that spicy food too can make you fat and so can coffee. You see, most of them is complete acids, and the more acids you have in your food, the body synthesizes fat to neutralize it. So even if you are not having any sweets or fatty foods, you can still get fat with excessive acidic foods not cos they have anything in them but because they help generation of fat produced by the body

6) DIET IS NOT ABOUT GIVING UP FOOD

The common misconception has always been “Saying NO to food means DIET”. But honestly that is not the case and if that is, it is the worst possible one. Don’t go in for those ready made shakes or the wheat grass or what not they have in the market which try to capitalize on your insecurity about weight. Look at your body, try understanding it and respecting it. Your body needs an adequate protein and a lot of fresh food. Mix and match food well so that you have a balanced routine.

For example if you are having acidic food, have a lot of fresh green salad with it, don’t have a potato salad with chicken because both are proteins, have a cucumber one instead, have those greens which have a lot of watery content in them. Have your fruits before the main course of food cos when you eat fruits, they immediately release fructose and you feel less hungrier and will perhaps gulp lesser.

7) THE CONCEPT OF PAIN AND PLEASURE

Most of the times, we use food as an alternate mechanism to keep us away from pain or lead us to pleasure. What if you are capable of controlling what you feel good about and what you can avoid. Can you bring in a new mechanism where you find a better alternative than eating junk when you feel bored, maybe call a friend, try learning a new art, something you might really enjoy so that you replace an involuntary behavior.

Try associating pain with eating a lot of junk food, remember the bad things that happened when you ate a lot of junk, remember how your friends make fun of you, remember how it affects your look, remember the girl who said NO when you asked her out cos you were too fat. Remember the bad stuff cos they have a lot of potential in them to bring that change!

8) FIND A PARTNER

One of the most exciting things about anything you would want to do in LIFE is finding a partner for the same. Talk to your friends, be with someone who is very serious about it. Talk about the achievements of saying NO to unhealthy food when you meet, talk about how the change feels, talk about what makes you feel good, talk about the new energy from the time you started limiting the junk consumption. There are so many things you can be happy about and you can reinforce eating healthy to that.

9) PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK EACH TIME YOU SAY NO!

It is a great thing to say NO to something you really like. And everytime you do that, you deserve a pat on your back, you need to feel good about it. Give yourself a reward! And by that I don’t mean a chocolate, give yourself  reward which you like – Like a ticket to a movie/play, like meeting a friend, like going out to join a sport .There are a hundreds of ways you can reward yourself. Or write to us below, we will love hearing about the times you said NO and stood tall for yourself.

10) IMAGINE HOW YOU WILL LOOK

Each time you say NO, imagine how you will look when you are at the peak of your health, imagine how those curves make you feel, imagine how good it feels to be in shape and being the eye sore of the group, imagine the confidence self control brings, imagine the smile you will have, imagine the way you will walk and talk to people, imagine how people will turn to look at you. Doesn’t that sound something you would look forward for? Isn’t this one morsel of food very small compared to what you are getting in return?

All I am saying is – You are way more important than that and your body is your temple – You wouldn’t want to mess it up!

  1. Thank you Alok :). I couldnt agree more, it does take a lot of courage to say NO to some foods, esp when you like them. Ha ha , well that is something you are blessed with Alok, you really are! :)

  2. Thank you Kokila :). I think moderation is one of the most intelligent ways of a diet, that gives a great feeling of being in control and also a feeling of relishing good food as well. All in all, it is a greater sensation being in control of the food than the other way round..

He he , I can understand the kids, I would listen to no diet when I was that young ;)

  3. Thank you Nimi :). Thanks so much, I have always been a huge fan of personal development and these ideas were very strongly derived from the time I was doing some research on improving my quality of life. Found them so productive that I thought it should be shared. And the real inspiration was that these steps were really easy and simple to follow and they work amazingly well :)

Thank you Shweta, I loved writing this post, felt it was more relevant and something that could bring in a little freshness to the established ideas of diet..

  6. Thanks so much Najm :). This is truly one of the best compliments a writer can hear. The ultimate goal has always been to see that it can add some value to people reading it, but listening to such wonderful comments, makes me feel that it was all worthwhile to go through the effort of making this post.. Thanks so much :) ..

He he, I think the images which strike the most to us are the regular occurrences, when I went on a diet, I used to always ask myself – How I would look with those cuts and I would imagine myself with my head held high, people turning to look back at me and all and sundry things and it all finally worked so well when put together and it still feels like one of the best times ever :).

He he that sounds interesting- Any reason is a great reason to shop ;) :D

  7. This is really inspiring and will make one think twice before craving again to lay hands over junk foods… :-D but I do love fuchkas ( Kolkatan version of paani-puri ) and I bet you’ll fall in love with it if you ever taste it… :-P

  8. To be truthful this was the most motivational post i read in ages in terms of food and health ! The best were the lines ‘ Think about a girl who said NO to you!”Hahaha and “Imagining the way I will walk and talk when I have those curves” *I actually imagined that :p* last but not the least I completely love the idea of rewarding myself when I say NO to food ! Trust me its ONE difficult thing saying No to yummy food :P And rewarding myself with a little shopping never hurt :D fantastic post !

  9. I so so liked the list Vinay. But here in Swiss you barely get junk and I am dying to get my hands on junk and gobble it all :) Overall awesome post!

  10. Well, Vinay, I am smiling as I am reading this. I did vaguely know all this, but you have made logical points out of it.

  11. Well…. I love junk food Vinay.. but yes eats it in moderation that means only when I go out or orders in :P which again means I seldom goes out and almost never orders in :) .. .. but my kids are not much pleased but guess you are :D

  12. Interesting post Vinay, though I always pat myself whenever I say a no to something which can create issues for my diabetes, and junk food includes in those list, but then it really require lots of courage to say No to them :) Though I found one secret of life, to say no to these junk foods, if you have the wife who can prepare the best possible foods at home, you will automatically start saying No to these junk foods. :)

  13. He he he… this reminded me of a Sanskrit verse I studied in school which implied that one could get one’s body through rebirth but it’s difficult to get a good tasty food again :)
